How do I edit content outside of a zone?
You cannot.  However if it just happened, you can try undoing your last action such as removing some text or a module.  If that doesn't work you will have to overwrite the page.

The Slideshow Module on my Site Loads Slowly?
There are several reasons that can cause this, 1.  You are using larger images, generally you should use images larger than 640x480 or 150KB in size.  2.  You have a large number of images and while loading the slideshow module displays image missing.
The Office Live slideshow is also a problem causer, 1. It can pages to freeze and not display, especially the home page; 2. Cause editing problems, not able to saves pages, ect. 3.  It throws off the alignment on the page and cause the pages to be 2-3 times wider and longer than what they are supposed to be.
Recommendations:  If you do decide to use the Office Live slideshow module, which I would recommend against, make sure you are images have a small file size, this way they will load quicker and don't use images that are larger than your page, a good maximum size is 640x480, it seems the larger the images the more the alignment is thrown off.
There are several good free alternatives:

What Does Office Live Support?
Office Live does not allow the use of any server side scripting languages such as PHP, MYSQL ect. The Site Designer will allow custom HTML, though you can't actually edit the HTML for your site; JavaScript, Flash objects, ect. And if you need some basic database features, the business applications will allow you to collect and publish to your website.
