Common Problems with the Site Designer

Cannot Save Changes?
There are number of reasons for this:
  • You paste content from another program (paste it through notepad first, explained below).
  • You pasted code directly into the page, you need to use the HTML module or the Custom Header/Navigation/Footer Modules.
  • You added a number of modules (such as HTML) and one of the modules has a duplicate ID. Try deleting the last added module.
  • A script error is preventing the editor from saving, this can happen for any number of reasons.

Pasting Content from other programs:
When pasting content from other programs especially MS Word or MS Publisher paste the content into MS Notepad first, it is under Start >> All Programs >> Accessories.  Now copy it back out of notepad and paste it into the Site Designer.  Notepad will remove any formatting that Office Live Site Designer does not support.

Copy/Paste/Cut/Drag?
Yes these do work. If they are not you probably have to "Allow programmatic access to clipboard" Click tools, under Internet Options, Security, Internet, Scripting set to disabled. Change the setting to "Enable". Also make sure security settings are default, also antivirus/spyware/firewalls can interfere.

Error: defer="defer" has been added to My Code?
This is not exactly an error, it is just a message letting you know that the HTML module has added defer="defer" to you script to attemt to make it work.  This only works some of the time, you can search this site for specific solutions to make your code work.

Page Editor Save/View buttons get moved up/disappear?
If the save and view buttons somehow disappear/get moved up just close and reopen the editor (quick key F5).

Where is the Custom Footer Module?
The Custom Footer module can be found under Modules in the Page Editor.  The Custom Footer is available only if you have Advanced Design Features activated, which is under Site Actions in the Page Manager.

Windows Live Experiencing Technical Difficulties?
This message usually is followed by the suggestion to try again latter, which generally does not work!
First off, do you have a partially delegated domain?  If yes, this is the cause of your problems.  You need to make the mydomain.web.officelive.com domain primary.  While this solution may not be acceptable, Office Live appears to have chosen not to resolve this issue.  Once done editing, you can switch back.
If this does not resolve your problems, the best bet is to try deleting Cookies: http://solutionsforofficelive.com/faq.aspx#fixall.
If that still does not work, then you should try contacting Office Live Support: https://support.smallbusiness.officelive.com/eform.aspx?productKey=olsmbfree&ct=eformts
